All That Glitters Is Not Gold – Sakura, Crowne Plaza

Walking inside one of the oldest hotels in Dubai, I couldn’t help but feel a little too excited. Located on theย busy SZR and among the fine hotels present along the same line, Crowne Plaza Hotel is easy to spot.

While I would have loved to spend time looking at the pretty decorations lined up, we were there to try the buffet at Sakura. Situated on the fourth floor, it’s easy to get a little confused with the entrance. The elevator opens up to Oscar’s Vine Society through which you need to pass to get to the entrance of the Japanese place.

Ms. Glaiza, the PR at Crowne Plaza gave us a very warm welcome and joined us for dinner with her colleague. We first ordered some drinks and found their Pina Colada quite refreshing. Our starters arrived next; Ebi Tempura which was a little soft, to be honest. The usual prawn tempura has a very crispy covering which is achieved by frying the prawn twice from what I’ve heard.

The buffet section displayed a lot of options of which there were some hits and some misses. The highlights were the California maki rolls, gyozas and salads and also their Teppanyaki station.

Our server suggested we try some of their dishes from the normal menu so we tried the Chicken Katsu and Noodles. The Chicken Katsu was a comforting bowl of deep fried chicken with sticky rice and boiled vegetables while the noodles didn’t meet my expectations.

After a very mediocre affair, we started towards the dessert section which presented a neatly arranged creme brulee in three flavors; mango, caramel, and praline. After which I ended my meal with a nice cup of Cappuccino.

Would I go back? With the way our evening was spent at Sakura, it seems very unlikely that I will be returning. The service was slow and the food passable. Other than the company at our table there wasn’t anything else that held my attention.

A bit disappointing when pretty hotels offer a less than average experience. A perfect example of how all that glitters is not always gold.

Until then, happy eating! xx
